OpenAI has introduced a new feature for ChatGPT called “Tasks,” designed to enhance the AI’s utility by allowing users to schedule reminders and automate future actions. This development positions ChatGPT as a more versatile digital assistant, comparable to services like Siri and Alexa.
Currently in beta, the Tasks feature is available to ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro subscribers. It enables users to set both one-time and recurring tasks, such as daily weather updates or reminders about important dates. To utilize this feature, users select the “4o with scheduled tasks” option in the model picker and specify the desired action along with the timing. For instance, one might instruct ChatGPT to “remind me to take my medication every morning at 8 AM” or “send me the weather forecast at 5 AM daily.” Additionally, ChatGPT can suggest tasks based on ongoing conversations, though user approval is required before any task is scheduled.
Task management is streamlined through chat threads or a dedicated Tasks section on the web interface. Notifications are delivered across web, desktop, and mobile platforms, ensuring users receive timely alerts. However, there is a limit of 10 active tasks at any given time. OpenAI has not yet indicated whether this feature will become available to free users in the future.
The introduction of Tasks reflects OpenAI’s commitment to evolving ChatGPT into a more autonomous and proactive assistant. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to develop AI agents capable of performing complex tasks independently. Projects like “Operator,” an AI designed to autonomously control computers, and “Caterpillar,” which aims to enable ChatGPT to search for information, analyze problems, and access documents without human intervention, are indicative of this direction.
While Tasks currently offers functionalities similar to existing digital assistants, ChatGPT’s advanced language processing capabilities provide a distinct advantage. Its ability to understand and generate human-like text allows for more natural and nuanced interactions, potentially enhancing user experience.
It’s important to note that Tasks is still in its beta phase, and certain limitations exist. For example, while it supports scheduled web browsing, it does not facilitate continuous searches or online purchases. Additionally, it cannot access information behind paywalls or perform real-time data retrieval. Users are advised to provide clear and specific instructions to maximize the effectiveness of the feature.
OpenAI plans to gather user feedback during this beta period to refine the feature further. Future updates may include broader availability, potentially extending to free users, and enhanced capabilities that allow for more complex task automation. As AI technology continues to advance, features like Tasks represent a significant step toward more integrated and autonomous digital assistants that can seamlessly assist with daily activities.
